Description
Alaska was added to the Union in 1959, the 49th state to join. The flag shown here was adopted in 1927 as the winning design from a contest. The blue background represents the sky, the water, and the flowers native to Alaska. The yellow stands for the natural wealth of the state. The stars form the constellation Ursa Major, with the eighth star representing the North Star.
