Armed with grit and a rather unorthodox flag, they dreamed of independence, sparking a rebellion against Mexican rule.
On June 14th, 1846, the winds of rebellion unfurled a symbol destined for greatness: the California Bear Flag. Stitched by William Todd on unbleached cotton, it spoke volumes. A lone star, echoing Texas’ defiance, burned bright with California’s desire for freedom. Beneath it, a mighty grizzly bear roared, embodying their strength and unwavering spirit. “California Republic,” proudly declared, completing the vision of an independent state. Though born from revolution, this bold banner eventually secured a place of honor, adopted in 1911 as the official emblem of California, forever carrying the echoes of that defining moment.
