Description
Iowa was added to the Union in 1846, the 29th state to join. The flag shown here was adopted in 1921. Its design mimics that of the French Tricolore, which indicates previous French ownership before the Louisiana Purchase. The motto on the ribbon translates to “Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain.” The eagle represents ties to the Union.
