Description
Kansas was added to the Union in 1861, the 34th state to join. The flag shown here was adopted in 1963, although the same design without the state name has been in use since 1927. The state motto on the seal translates to “To the stars through difficulties,” and it represents the pre-statehood turmoil in Kansas, one of the causes of the Civil War. The sunflower is the state flower, and the 34 stars indicate the fact that Kansas was the 34th state.
