Description
Louisiana was added to the Union in 1812, the 18th state to join. The flag shown here was adopted in 1912. The pelican in the center is an emblem from the state seal; it is feeding its young with its own blood, representing selflessness and sacrifice. The state motto (“Union, Justice, and Confidence”) is emblazoned on the scroll along the bottom.
