Description
Maine was added to the Union in 1820, the 23rd state to join. The flag shown here was adopted in 1909. The arms show a white pine, which gives the state its nickname of the Pine Tree State. The star and motto (“Dirigo,” I direct) represent the North Star, which was a guiding landmark for trappers, explorers, and settlers.
