Description
Massachusetts was one of the original thirteen colonies. The flag shown here was adopted in 1908. The star represents the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and a Native American holding a bow and arrow has long been a commonly recognized emblem of the state. The motto translates to “By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty.” This acted as a message to the British shortly prior to the onset of the Revolution.
