Description
In 1894, Mississippi adopted the present state flag, replacing the Magnolia Flag adopted in 1861. The new flag takes part of the Confederate’s Stars and Bars Flag and Confederate Battle Flag. The upper quarter of the flag echoes the Confederate Battle Flag while the three horizontal blue, white and red stripes are similar to the design of the first flag of the Confederacy. In 2001, a referendum was put before voters to change the state flag to one similar to the current flag except with 20 stars in a blue cannon; this flag was defeated and old flag of 1894 was retained.
