Description
New Jersey was one of the original thirteen colonies. The flag shown here was adopted in 1896. The gold color of the background is called “buff,” and it was proclaimed by George Washington as the official color of state regiments. The arms are supported by Liberty and Ceres, or Demeter, the goddess of agriculture. On the arms are three ploughs which indicate that New Jersey was the third state admitted to the U.S.
