History of Texas Flag
The history of Texas flags is a complex and colorful one, reflecting the state’s unique history and culture. The first flag to fly over Texas was the Spanish flag, which was raised in 1519 by Spanish explorer Alonso Álvarez de Pineda. In 1685, French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, claimed Texas for France and raised the French flag. In 1821, Mexico gained independence from Spain and Texas became part of Mexico. The Mexican flag flew over Texas until 1836, when Texas declared independence and adopted its own flag, known as the Burnet Flag. The Burnet Flag was replaced in 1839 by the Lone Star Flag, which is still the official flag of Texas today. The Lone Star Flag has a single white star on a blue field, representing Texas’ status as a lone star state.
