Peru is located in South America, west of Brazil. Formerly the home of the famous Inca civilization, it received independence from Spain in 1821, and it currently has a population of approximately 27 million. The flag shown here was adopted in 1825. The colors represent war and courage (red) and peace and prosperity (white). The national arms are emblazoned on the center. They show symbols of animals, vegetables, and minerals. The palm and laurel wreath symbolize peace.
