Wyoming was added to the Union in 1890, the 44th state to join. The flag shown here was adopted in 1917. The colors (red, white, blue) signify the blood of the pioneers and Native Americans, purity, and the skies and justice, respectively. The bison represents the native wildlife. The woman holding a banner saying “equal rights” indicates that Wyoming was among the first states to give suffrage to women. The lamps represent enlightenment and knowledge.
