Washington was added to the Union in 1889, the 42nd state to join. The flag shown here was adopted in 1923. The state’s nickname, “The Evergreen State,” is reflected in the green background. This version of G. Washington’s portrait was adopted in 1967, although the seal has been the same design since Washington became a state.
